This course leads students through a critical reckoning with the past (and present) of the discipline, while also celebrating the transformative potential of cultural anthropology to contribute to a more inclusive and just world. The course is structured in a way that underlines the broad relevance of cultural anthropology, both in students’ everyday lives and in addressing complex social, political, and ethical issues in the world. Students work on two creative projects in this course: an autoethnographic video (digital narrative) about some aspect of their social/cultural identity, and a series of podcast episodes about cultural appropriation that they produce in groups. These projects prime students to effectively communicate the insights that come from critical self-reflection and in-depth research.
