This course is a hands-on introduction to ethnographic field methods. Working on a project of their choosing, students practice the main methods used by cultural anthropologists: participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Students receive feedback from classmates during interactive peer review sessions, and they submit weekly self-evaluations of their work. This methodological training is accompanied by critical reflections about the ethics and politics of ethnographic research and writing, as well as the discussion and evaluation of ethnographic texts. Students’ semester-long research culminates in writing a short ethnographic text intended for a broad audience.
